He appeared in local newspapers, and even once on television. There was political unrest in Dhaka around the time. Particularly around an election. The government stamped down pretty ruthlessly on protestors. Fahim's father was somehow involved - their house was raided and the family asked questions Then they received a letter, saying that Fahim would be kidnapped.

Apparently kidnapping people's children was one of the ways the used to threaten or punish families, and Fahim's reputation made him particularly vulnerable. In the end his parents made the huge decision that he and his father should go to Europe where he would be safe from these kidnapping threats. Fahim was eight. They left behind his mother, sister and baby brother. This was relatively comfortable.

During this time Fahim was sent to school, where he quickly picked up French. His father was frustrated because he wasn't allowed to work, instead all his efforts went into trying to create a home for Fahim. The man who ran it - Xavier Parmentier - was to become a very good friend to the family, as well as tutoring Fahim with his chess. Fahim was doing very well, both a school and at his chess, but then he and his father had their application for asylum rejected. They were moved out of the centre, and into a series of different rooms in different buildings, run by various charities.

Some of the places were dirty, uncomfortable and unwelcoming. Then they were turned out of this accommodation too. Fahim was fortunate enough to be offered a home with one of the families attending the chess club, but his father had to sleep in a tent in a local park. Fahim started having problems at school, and his chess playing at this time was patchy. He was very worried about his father. At age 11 he was nevertheless entered for the prestigious chess competition - The Under 12 French National Championship.
